Trying my first (and only) cup of Greek coffee

During our trip to Athens in 2019, my best friend and I embarked on a food tour, ready to dive headfirst into the local culinary scene.

Honey-Cured Olives: A bitter-sweet tasting

Our first stop? Olives. Now, let's just say my relationship with olives is...complicated. I'm not a fan. At all. But, I was told these were honey-cured, and I thought, 'Honey? That's sweet! Maybe I can do this.' Spoiler alert: I could not.

The honey-cured olives looked innocent enough, glistening in their little dish. I took a bite, hoping for a sweet, tangy miracle. What I got was...well, an olive. And not even a particularly apologetic olive. The honey did little to mask the briny, pungent flavor. My friend, who actually likes olives on his pizza, also grimaced. 'These are…intense,' he said, while we both tried to discreetly avoid eating any more. 'They're an acquired taste!' he said, with a very forced tone. It was a shared moment of olive-induced despair.

The Nitty Gritty: Greek Coffee

After that olive ordeal, we moved onto the coffee. My friend insisted it was a 'cultural experience' – Greek coffee. Now, let's be real, folks. My relationship with coffee is less 'sophisticated connoisseur' and more 'give me all the sugar and cream, please.' My usual coffee order sounds more like a dessert than a beverage. So, when my best friend practically shoved this dark, mysterious liquid under my nose at a traditional Greek coffee shop, I thought, 'Why not? How bad can it be?' Famous last words, right?

The barista prepared it in a small copper pot, and I was amazed by the aroma that filled the room. Then I tasted it. It was indeed strong, and I was not amazed by the grounds that filled the bottom of the cup. It was gritty, and bitter, and I found myself missing my frappuccino. My friend, however, was on a mission. 'You can't come to Greece and not try the coffee!' he declared, with the kind of enthusiasm that usually precedes some sort of mildly unpleasant adventure. Little did I know, I was about to embark on a bitter, gritty adventure that would solidify my undying love for sugary Starbucks concoctions. I mean, I love my friend, but sometimes his 'cultural experiences' taste like they’ve been brewed in the depths of Hades.

My experience in Athens taught me that Greek coffee is more than just a beverage; it's a cultural experience. It's a way to connect with the local people, to learn about their traditions, and to savor the flavors of Greece. And sometimes, it's a way to recover from an olive-related trauma. Though, I still would have preferred a frappuccino.
